The 74th annual meeting of the New York State Association of European Historians will be held in Oswego, NY at SUNY Oswego, on 4-5 October, 2024. The theme of this year’s conference is “immigration” broadly interpreted.
Plenary Lecture:
The conference begins on Friday evening at SUNY Oswego with a dinner and the James S. Valone plenary lecture “Defining Sovereignty and Imperial Rule: Ottoman Borderlands in Early Modern Europe, by Dr. Murat Yaşar, Professor of Early Modern and Ottoman History at SUNY Oswego, and the author of numerous articles as well as a wonderful new book, The North Caucasus Borderland: Between Muscovy and the Ottoman Empire, 1555-1605 published by Edinburgh University.
Panels:
Panel I: “Engaging Advanced Students in Historical Inquiry,” a roundtable featuring Dr. Brian Newsome [Georgia State College and Univeristy], Dr. Lyn Blancfield [SUNY Oswego], and Tanya Blakeley-Clark [Buffalo Public Schools]
Panel II: “Reactions to Ottoman Immigrants and Immigration”
Panel III: “Challenging Culture”
Panel IV: “Castes and Colonialism”
Panel V: “Graduate Student Topics”
Panels will be held on Saturday at SUNY Oswego with locations to be announced.

Accommodation:
In preparation for our annual meeting, a block of twenty rooms has been reserved for attendees at the Clarion Hotel in Oswego, New York. Check-in will begin at 03:00pm on 4 October and guests must check out by 11:00am on 5 October. Reservations may be made by calling the hotel directly, or by using the online booking link found below.

Richardson-Bates House Museum-“One of the most intact house museums in New York State. It offers a unique glimpse into the lifestyle of a prominent wealthy Oswego family and serves as the place where history comes alive in Oswego County.”
The Fort Ontario Historic Site-“Visitors to Fort Ontario State Historic Site today will see the star-shaped fort dating to the early 1840’s with 1863 to 1872 improvements. From 1944 to 1946 the fort served as the only refugee camp in the United States for mostly Jewish victims of the Nazi Holocaust under an Executive Order from President Franklin D. Roosevelt.”
The H. Lee Maritime Museum-“The H. Lee White Marine Museum is located in Oswego, New York. It was founded in 1982 by Rosemary Sinnett Nesbitt, a local professor and the City of Oswego Historian and is dedicated to preserving the maritime history of Oswego!”
