The 76th annual meeting of the New York State Association of European Historians will be held in Cortland, NY at the State University of New York at Cortland, October 9-10, 2026.
Professor Catherine M. Mooney of Boston College will deliver the James A. Valone Keynote Address entitled “Saint Josephine Bakhita: History, Hagiography, and the Historian’s Task.”
The keynote will take place on Friday evening following a reception and dinner.
Concurrent panels will take place Saturday morning and afternoon.
We encourage submissions addressing any aspect of European history or Europe’s connections with New York State or the wider world, in any time period. We invite traditional research presentations and pedagogy-focused presentations from professional historians and graduate students, as well as undergraduate paper presentations. Full panel proposals are also welcome.
A set of optional thematic strands connected with the keynote lecture will focus on migration, race, encounter, and construction of memory as well as religious history. We particularly welcome papers on these topics as relevant to any aspect of European history or Europe’s connections with New York State or the wider world, in any time period.
The Association provides a welcoming and collegial atmosphere at its conferences, and we particularly encourage graduate students and independent and early-career scholars to submit proposals, including papers based on work(s)-in-progress.
Graduate students presenting at the conference may submit their work for consideration in the annual Barbara Blaszak Prize competition, which awards $500 to the best graduate student paper. Graduate students will also be eligible for a reduced registration fee.
Proposals for presentations and/or panels should include an abstract of no more than 250 words for each presentation and a one-paragraph biography for each presenter. For panel proposals, please include contact information for all presenters.
